You need self care in your life.
See what I did there?
Self care is for E V E R Y O N E.
It’s all about filling your cup. It’s about looking after your physical and mental self. Whether we are feeling on top of the world or like we are at rock bottom, we have to take care of ourselves. We have to fuel ourselves. We have to nurture ourselves. Of course, it may look different at those different stages, but self care is fluid and ever–changing.

How to embrace self care:
Disconnect from social media.
To start I think it’s important to disconnect from social media and connect fully with yourself. Be 100% present. Tune into how you are truly feeling. Self care is about looking after YOU, not impressing your Instagram besties or comparing yourself to your Facebook friends.
Ensure you are committed to the self care activity you choose.
Let’s be real. Most of us have all bought something expensive, called it self care, and then felt completely guilty afterwards for days/weeks.
That’s not effective self care. The guilt completely defeats the purpose.
So how do you avoid falling into that trap?
By thinking about what you will get out of the activity.
How will it benefit you? Why is this method of self care the one you are choosing today? Is it within your means? How will it strengthen your physical, mental or emotional wellbeing?
When you understand what you are doing and why, the self care becomes more empowering, and a stronger part of self love. You choose to take care of yourself unapologetically, and that is amazing.
Okay, I got a little deep there for a second. Really what I want to say is TREAT YO’ SELF (but stay within your means!).
15 Self Care Ideas You Can Do At Home:
Hot coffee or tea
I don’t know about you, but having the time to savor a hot cup of my favourite brew or tea is invigorating. My toddler keeps me on the run, so when I get a chance to slow down and actually enjoy sipping my afternoon latte, well that’s one appreciated treat!
Read a Book
Curl up in your favourite chair, with your favourite blanket and dive into another world. Reading is good for you in more ways than you can count.
Face mask
Take the time to look after your skin. Face masks are great for having a mini spa day at home!
My morning routine is an element of my daily self care routine as it allows me to begin the day in the right mindset. I’ve incorporated a skin care routine into it and I always feel so much better. You can read all about creating your own empowering routine in this blog post.
Paint your Nails
There’s something satisfying about having perfectly done nails, isn’t there? Take a few minutes out of your busy day and do your own.
Bubble Bath
Probably one of the more cliche self care ideas, but that’s because it’s soooo relaxing. Use a bath bomb, read a book, bring a glass of wine with you – or better yet, do all 3! This one is all about resting to revitalize.
Journal
My personal favourite because you can combat any and all difficult feelings through journaling. You can reframe any inhibitions, limiting beliefs, and self-doubt. Convert them into affirmations, mantras and empowering statements.
Listen to a podcast
It’s always a treat to find some time to listen to my favourite podcasts (usually I’m listening to my rambunctious toddler :P).
Need some recommendations? I love Manifestion Babe for getting inspired, Grown Ups Who Read Things They Wrote As Kids for a laugh and Inbox Besties for blog development.
Bake a treat
Cookies, cakes, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, pastries…. If baking is a stress reliever for you, it can be a form of self care. Obviously if you find baking stressful, this is not the one for you…
FaceTime a friend
Connect with friends or family. Give yourself completely to the conversation (no distractions) and ask them to do the same. Deep conversation is good for the soul.
Diffuse essential oils
I am admittedly new to this, and I’m wondering why I waited so long. Essential oils are amazing. As I type this my room smells like a root beer float – and it’s all non-toxic unlike the majority of candles out there!
Listen to music
I’m sure you’ve noticed music has an incredible ability to affect our emotions. Make a self care playlist full of your favourite songs!
Charcuterie for one
I’m obsessed with charcuterie.
I love taking a half hour to sit down with a delightful plate of my favourite snacks and just focus on being present and enjoying every bite.
Meditate/pray/breathe
I don’t think this one needs any explanation…
Take a nap
Slow down and give your body the rest it needs.
Meal plan
Yes, I said it. Meal planning as self care?! Let me just tell you your future self will thank you for having a meal plan ready to go and for freeing up all of that time and energy you would spend wondering what the heck to make – on doing other things that fill your cup!

Fill your cup, mamas.

I am so guilty of the buying a gift for myself and then feeling bad about it! And I wish it was because I was spending outside my means and not just feeling like I could have saved it for something that benefits everyone in the family. The mom guilt is so real! But, I always have hot coffee because I skip the regular mug and just put it into a travel mug to begin with because of chasing after my own toddler. Our favorite mugs around here are Contigo (our au pair’s), Starbucks (mine), and Yeti (my husband’s).
Danielle from Whether the Storm Blog
I love this post! I am always feeling guilty when it comes to self care because I tell myself it isn’t something I need and since it’s not tangible, I have a hard time justifying it. I’m working on this and letting myself enjoy and deserve it. I’ve also been making it a point to sit outside each morning with some hot tea before starting my day and I love how calm of a start it is to my day. Perks of working from home! Xoxox
