Designing the nursery was one of my favorite parts of pregnancy as a first time mama! There is so much excitement and anticipation as a new mom to be and it feels so wonderful to create a loving space for the baby.
I chose to keep the gender of our baby a surprise (until the ultrasound technician blew it at the end of my pregnancy, you can read about that story here), so I knew I wanted to create a beautiful gender neutral space.
I’m originally from a small town in the mountains in British Columbia, Canada. It felt natural to me to want to bring a nature element into the nursery since we are raising our daughter in a big city. I hope she grows up to appreciate the beauty of both!

Gender Neutral Woodland Nursery Decor
Cloud shelves
These whimsical shelves are from Target and are perfect for displaying books, teddy’s or other baby trinkets.
Crib
Our crib is special to us because my mom helped me choose it just days before she passed away. We settled on a modern design mixing white and natural woods.
You can find it here at Wayfair.
Crib mattress
If you don’t plan on co-sleeping, your baby and toddler will likely a TON of time in their crib. This item is worth selecting carefully. We chose the NewtonBaby Crib mattress because it’s breathable (you can bury your face in it and still breathe) and washable (the entire thing can go in the shower!).
Crib sheets
If you do go with the NewtonBaby mattress you don’t need crib sheets, but if you decide you want some I love the Aden and Anais breathable muslin crib sheets (available on Amazon).
Wreath
The wreath you see above the crib was a craft made by yours truly. I bought a giant hoop on etsy (I’m not linking because it came bent and wasn’t the best customer experience) and I wrapped it with some Christmas greenery we had lying around (that we got at Micheal’s – frugal Mom tip sign up for their email list and get coupons before buying anything!). The plan is to put a decal or wooden sign with Stella’s name in the middle!
Dresser
A big dresser has been amazing for storing all the baby things & clothes. Many of the drawers were empty in the early days, but they are filling up now as my daughter is growing.
We used this Ikea dresser we used to have in our master bedroom.
Change tray
Instead of buying a separate changing table I am all for adding a simple tray to a dresser. This is much more multipurpose as your child can use a dresser for years to come. Also, let’s be real. Half the time you are going to change your kiddo on the floor/bed/couch! The one pictured in our nursery is no longer available but there is a similar one here on Amazon!
Printed Sign
This sign features lyrics from one of my favourite songs. We purchased it from Small Wood Home.
Rocking chair.
Ahhh rocking a baby, one of my favourite things to do! Our rocking chair is from World Market. The quality is top-notch and I love that the cushions are not attached (makes for easy cleaning….because babies).
One thing to consider when you are looking for a rocking chair is whether you want head support. I didn’t mind not having it with this chair because we had a cozy bed in the nursery to curl up in if I needed to lay down. A lot of my mama friends swear by their gliders!
Tree decals
Quite possibly my favorite part of the nursery. They are a big hit with Stella too. She’s loved staring at the pattern since she was an infant. You can grab them on Amazon by clicking here.
Tree hooks
More of my favorite whimsical neutral woodland nursery details, these hooks are so fun (available on Amazon)! I did remove the backing they came with and used some velcro we had instead.
Basket of blankets
A cozy touch to the room, I used a large wicker basket to house all the baby blankets (gifts and blankets that were mine or my husbands). This one was a HomeGoods find!
Rug/Play mat
Basically, soft surfaces for baby to play on!
We have this foam play mat that is great because you can easily wipe it clean (it’s available on Amazon).
I also bought this cute bear rug to put under the rocking chair (available on Amazon).
Other items to consider for your gender neutral woodland nursery:
- Toy storage
- Bookshelves (you can check out my favourite baby books here)
- Diaper genie / trash can
- Clock (for timing those nursing sessions!)
- Art & other decorations
Have so much fun planning your nursery mama!

How beautiful!
So many wonderful ideas for this theme! I really love those tree hooks, they’re adorable! Thanks for all of the ideas. 😊
Ugh I love it so much! The pops of orange brighten it up and I can’t believe how well the tree decals turned out. Perfect for little Miss Stella!
Gorgeous woodland nursery! I love the tree hooks the most.
